SC rejects petitions against bill to abolish death penalty

The Supreme Court has informed that it has dismissed three petitions challenging the private member's bill to abolish the death penalty, Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri told Parliament today (Aug 20).

These petitions had been filed at the Supreme Court after United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Bandula Lal Bandarigoda had tabled a bill proposing to abolish capital punishment in the country.

Mr. Kumarasiri told Parliament that court had rejected the petitions by citing that it did not have the jurisdiction to determine whether a bill has been drafted in line with the constitution.
