Gota faction response to abductions Featured

A Face Book post by Jennifer Weerasinghe, the mother of the student who was abducted in 2008 Jamaldeen Dilan has created much hype over social media.

“The tears in these eyes waiting for justice for my son who went missing among the 11 boys have still not dried out. I waited for justice through the courts, still waiting for justice to be served on us…" her FB post states. (2019.08.11)

The significance of Jennifer is that she is the wife of an ex-serviceman who was on active duty.

Expressing her grief, Jennifer took to FB to vent her concerns after hearing of the former Defence Secretary being nominated as the SLPP presidential candidate. He was in charge at the time the 11 youths had been abducted.

Her son, Jamaldeen Dilan and four of his friends disappeared on September 17th 2008. His friends were Pradeep Wishwanathan, Tillakeshwaran Ramalingham, Rajeev Naganathan and Mohammed Saajith.

The CID is currently conducting investigations regarding the 11 youths who were abducted and held at variopus locations including Kotahena, Wellawatte, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and several other places between the period August 08th to September 17, 2008.

The former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda is facing allegations of being involved in the abduction of the youths during the 2008 to 2009 period, but recently President Maitripala Sirisena had promoted Karannagoda to the highest naval rank of Admiral of the Fleet.

However, the racist groups who defend him claims that these are allegations levelled against the security personnel for revenge on the directions of the international community.

The police notified court in 2015 that the personal security officer of the former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda had been involved in the abduction and disappearance of the 11 youths from the Dehiwala area.

The OIC of the CID Special Investigations Unit Nishantha Silva told court that investigations had revealed that Wasantha Karannagoda had been aware of the abductions.

"I will take on the security of all children" – Gotabhaya Rajapaksa

Addressing the SLPP convention on August 11th presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that he would take on the responsibility of protecting the youth.

“I will undertake the security of you and your children. Our strength is national unity. I pledge that a peaceful and safe environment would be established where every citizen can live peacefully without fear. I will not allow extremism at any cost,” the former Defence Secretary stated.
Expressing his views the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that the war heroes are being herded into the gallows.

“The difference between a war hero and a murderer should be clearly identified.”

Having dismissed claims that war heroes are being targeted, Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake has stated on several occasions that one needs to identify the difference between a war hero and a murderer.

When Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was nominated as the SLPP presidential candidate, in a Twitter message Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera had questioned if the country needs to revert back to a dark era.

Meanwhile, during an interview with ITN on August 11th, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge had this to say.

“I form my opinion about people not on the words they utter. No matter how much they sweet talk or how dashingly they smile, one must look closely at their actions. He had the chance to develop the country over a period of nine long years together with his brother. But, if we look at what had been done, we cannot come to the conclusion that they had developed the country. The country was taken to brink of ruin.”

However, in his address to the nation, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa stated that he would take steps to establish law and order in the country.

"Allegations are fake” – Keheliya Rambukwella

Meanwhile, MP Keheliya Rambukwella said that in the event Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is elected as the President investigations regarding the disappearances would be conducted.

“We can be assured of the independence and integrity of the judiciary and the rule of law. His first agenda is the establishment of law and order through the independence of the judiciary,” he had told the BBC Sinhala Service.
Responding to allegations against the Rajapaksas’ he said these were all false allegations and most of them have already been disproved.
“Since 2015, not just one lie but a factory of lies has been created. They levelled many allegations against the Rajapaksa family. They established special courts and said they would bring the Rajapaksa family before the law. Once they came to power they had the authority to take matters to court if any wrong had been committed. Therefore, it has already been proved that the allegations the government levelled were blatant lies,” Rambukwella further noted.

Meanwhile, addressing a media briefing on August 08th Basil Rajapaksa noted that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is a “leader with democratic qualities”.
