‘Not even the president can save Wilpattu’ Featured

The Environment Conservation Trust alleges not even the Wildlife Conservation Department which is under president Maithripala Sirisena has been able to halt the massive clearing and occupation of land taking place in the Wilpattu national park.

image 1480877027 e4911b1152The court action taken by the department has failed to prevent the destruction in four forest zones north of the national park, ECT’s Sajiva Chamikara says.

He reveals the clearing of the part of jungle known as Kal Aru in Moosali divisional secretariat area of Mannar district and the settlements began way back in 2010.

In all around 3,400 acres of jungle cover has been cleared and settlements made for political motives, Chamiraka notes.
