China provides Rs. 2.6 b donation to SL

The Chinese government has provided a financial donation of Rs. 2.6 billion to Sri Lanka after considering the security situation following the Easter Sunday suicide bombings, the Presidential Media Division says.

The donation had been made upon the request of Sri Lankan President - Maithripala Sirisena, who met with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing yesterday (14).

The Chinese president has also agreed to provide 100 jeeps worth Rs. 1.5 billion and other facilities to the Sri Lanka Police Department.

The two leaders had had also discussed the strengthening of the cooperation between the security forces and the expansion of information exchange between intelligence agencies.

Following the meeting with the Sri Lankan president, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that the Chinese government and people stand firmly with the Sri Lankan people and resolutely support Sri Lanka in safeguarding its national security and stability.

Both sides need to maintain the high-level dialogue regularly, promote cooperation in jointly building the Belt and Road, facilitate law-enforcement and security cooperation, and enhance cooperation against non-traditional security threats, he added.

Adding his remarks, president Sirisena appreciated China's forthright position on Sri Lanka's counter-terrorism strategy and efforts.

He has also said that the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations which opened today in Beijing, will promote mutual understanding and respect and shared prosperity among countries with an emphasis on civilizations.
