Maithri not named as presidential candidate - Chandrika Featured

The SLFP has taken no decision to name incumbent Maithripala Sirisena as the party’s presidential candidate in 2020, says ex-president Chandrika Kumaratunga.

At a media briefing in Colombo today (10), she answered a question raised and said that only ministers of the party had expressed their ideas about the next presidential polls.

Kumaratunga said as a senior leader of the party that president Sirisena has promised to abolish executive presidency after his term ended.

However, the party’s central committee has decided at a meeting that president Sirisena should seek a second term at the 2020 election, SLFP minister Sarath Amunugama has told BBC Sandeshaya.

President Sirisena, who chaired the meeting, did not make a comment, according to Amunugama.

His claim was confirmed by SLFP general secretary Duminda Dissanayake at a function in Anuradhapura yesterday.
