EU requests to suspend death sentence Featured

The European Union representative board has stated that the Sri Lankan Government is planning on implementing the death sentence after 43 years in accordance with the drug racket.

Therefore, the European Union had noted that the implementation of the death sentence should be suspended.

They stated that as agreed upon at the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in December 2018, the Sri Lankan Government would suspend the implementation of the death sentence.

The notice was issued on the agreement reached with France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Norway and Switzerland High Commissions.

The European Union has stated that the drug racket is a fast spreading scourge world over and it understands the necessity to take action against it.

However, they stated that the death sentence has not proved to be a productive solution to the issue, adding that they are ready to share their experiences on fighting the drug menace.
