Traffic jams cause annual loss of Rs. 400 b Featured

A Moratuwa University Professor Amal Kumarage has pointed out that the economic loss incurred due to the traffic congestion on the roads amounts to around Rs. 397 billion annually.

He had revealed this information to the BBC Sinhala service. He had noted that the traffic congestion in the Colombo city results in around Rs. 300 million daily.

Accordingly the losses incurred due to the traffic congestion in the Colombo and adjacent areas is around 365 billion per year.

In the rest of the areas too the losses due to traffic congestion amounts to around Rs. 35 billion.

Meanwhile, Peradeniya University Professor O.A. Illeperuma pointed out that the air pollution in the Kandy city is four times higher than Colombo.

He stated that around a million vehicles enter the Kandy city daily and taking into account the wastage of fuel and labour, the economic loss to the country amounts to around Rs. 397 billion annually.
