A deterrent to drug smuggling by fishing boats

State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Dilip Wedarachchi has taken measures to launch a piece of software that is helpful to control of drug smuggling and other illegal activities carried out using fishing boats.

Fishing boat owners were briefed on this software and none of the forms that are currently being filled by fishermen are necessary further with the new launch. The fishermen have been protesting for years on filling forms and the new software has given solutions to the demands of the fisher folk.

This software will provide information to the Department of Fisheries, Navy and Coast Guard on the vessel, its cargo, its employees and its accompanying items when venturing to sea.

According to such information, the authorities will be able decide on authenticity of their activities and the information can be verified in a shorter period of time averting a range of illegal activities.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi stated that this software, which enables to locate the place of the vessel, will be vital importance to the fisher folk.

The Minister said that fishermen will be connected to digital auctions centers via the software and they will be able to sell their fish stock from the very point they catch their fish harvest. He added that this software will be available to consumers for download as well.

Accordingly, it was revealed that this software can be used to send photographs of fish caught in the sea to consumers to check before buying online.
