Medical reports on fitness creates chaos

The government has decided that all school athletes who compete in the sports events should submit a medical report on fitness. The Education Ministry has informed in this regard to principals of all schools island-wide by a circular.

However, government hospitals in the Puttalm district has no facility to do medical examinations.

The only place in the North Western province to examine physical fitness of the athletes and issue valid certificates is in Kurunegala. The institute in Kurunegala also receives a large volume of applications on daily basis for medical examinations. Due to this situation, the institute has provided later appointments to the applicants.

Inter-house annual sports competitions in most of the schools in the Puttalam District are being held these days and it is compulsory to produce fitness reports to take part in athletic events. However, the appointments given to the students do not comply with inter-house sports competition dates and if live up to appointments they can undergo the medical tests few weeks after the athletic competitions, students complain.

In the Puttalam district, there are 01 general hospital, two base hospitals and 04 district hospitals. They say that it is pointless to go to Kurunegala to obtain medical certificates, in such a situation. It was revealed in an investigation that although all the facilities needed to conduct medical check-ups are available at the Chilaw General Hospital, there is no trained staff to perform such tests.
