'Don't think of winning with minority vote' Featured

Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara says that the formation of a broad coalition by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is a necessity of the era.

If someone thinks of winning upcoming elections with the minority vote while disregarding the majority Sinhalese vote, that is a mere myth, he says.

Dr. Amarasekara was speaking at an event in Gampaha yesterday (07).

He said that racist and separatist political parties of the North-East region lack the true minority vote base, even though certain politicians these days are exclaiming that they cannot position themselves on race and risk losing the minority vote.

He elaborated on this by saying that the TNA managed to secure only 24.7% and 24.8% of the total vote count in the North and East provinces respectively, during the last LG polls in 2018 February.

Accordingly, it can be seen that 65% of the Tamil masses in the North do not approve of their politics, Dr. Amarasekara said, adding that political leaders and parties currently do not have an alternative to address masses who reject separatism, racism and cast based policies.

Sinhala vote percentage should be upped

Speaking further, he said that in order for Mahinda Rajapaksa's candidate to win at the next presidential election, the vote percentage secured by Mr. Rajapaksa in 2015 should be increased from 58.2% to 65%. Similarly, the minority vote of 12.7% secured in 2015 too should be increased to 15%, he added.

Anyone who understands this would be able to clearly identify the challenge, he further said.

Dr. Amarasekara was referring to a recent statement made by the SLPP founder - Basil Rajapaksa.

Mr. Rajapaksa had recently stated that the SLPP is capable of winning any upcoming election, regardless of whether the party is able to come to an agreement with the SLFP.
