Maithri will not recognize natl. govt. Featured

President Maithripala Sirisena has decided not to grant any more ministerial positions if the UNP forms a national governemnt with the support of the one SLMC MP.

A spokesman for the President’s Office said the president would not recognize a national government and would consider the cabinet to have 30 members only.

SLFP general secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara has warned of disciplinary action against any party MPs who would support the UNP to form a national government.

Ministers explain its purpose

However, minister Thalatha Athukorale said a national government was wanted not to increase the number of ministers.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said the national government would be intended at getting the support of parties honestly comitted for nation building.

Prime minister Wickremesinghe has invited MPs of other parties to join the government.

TNA will not support

Meanwhile, the TNA says it opposes attempts by the UNP to form a national government anti-democratically.

Its MP E. Saravanabhavan questioned as to why more ministers were needed.

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila charged the government was trying to increase the number of ministers to 48.

That is unethical and unconstitutional, he said.
