Sri Lanka is currently referred to as the ‘Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka’ but he said it is sufficient to refer to it as the Republic of Sri Lanka.
The minister said this during an inspection tour of a beach garden in Weligama, Matara.
In a twitter post, Minister Mano Ganesan had said that he agrees with Minister Patali Champika in adopting the shorter form.
“Our party feels that instead of referring to the country with a long name as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka it is more practical to just use the term Republic of Sri Lanka. There is a media campaign alleging that the country’s name is to be changed and trying to mislead the public. However, it is amply adequate to just refer to the country as the Republic of Sri Lanka,” he said.
