Retired Navy officer to head Customs! Featured

Cabinet approval has been given to appoint a retired senior Navy officer as director general of the Customs.

However, the appointment is yet to be made, a senior official of the Finance Ministry told Sri Lanka Mirror.

The move follows accusations of disregard and inefficiency on the part of the Customs in curbing drug the menace.

Also, it is alleged the income of the Customs is on the decline.

Customs officers are staging union action to protest the appointment of an outsider as their chief.

The Ministry official said the president was taking the matter of the drug menace seriously.

Death penalty for drug traffickers - president

President Sirisena has told a anti-narcotics campaign in Matara that the death penalty would be reintroduced in order to curb the menace.

A war similar to the one waged against LTTE terrorism has to be waged against narcotic drugs, he said.
