Ravi backs Green energy ; worries over cost (Video)

The Green Energy Champion 2019 competition organised by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Sri Lanka Sustainable Authority was kicked off for the third successive year yesterday (28).

Speaking at the event, minister of power and energy - Ravi Karunanayake said that although it is timely to move into green energy sources which are found in abundance in the country, the cost remained a formidable factor.

“The general generating cost, in marginal terms, is roughly Rs.22 per unit while the selling rate is Rs.16.Therefore, you can seethe enormous gap. You could see it is very encouraging for us to go towards renewable, but that’s not cheap,” he elaborated.

He further said :

The event, launched at the German embassy, was also attended by German Ambassador Jörn Rohde, GIZ Country Director for Sri Lanka and Maldives Randa Korieh-Ranarivelo, GIZ Head of Project Daniel Schreiber, Power and Energy Secretary Dr. B. M. S. Batagoda and other project partners.
