A MoU was signed by tea estate employers and trade unions at Temple Trees today (28) in the presence of prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to raise the daily wage of an estate worker to Rs. 500 and the incentive payment to Rs. 40 per kilo.

Also, the MoU, effective for a two year period, says the wage arrears for three months have to be paid to the workers.

Later in the day, estate workers staged protests against the MoU and demanded that the wage be raised to Rs. 1,000.

One demonstration in front of the Employers Association office at Rajagiriya saw the demonstrators involved in heated arguments with the police.

Another protest, at Hatton town, led to the temporary closure of the main road to Nuwara Eliya.
