Case against the government! Featured

Meanwhile, the UPFA has initiated a national centre for a free and fair election and a representative of that centre S.M. Chandrasena said that they plan on filing a case against the government by the end of January seeking the right to hold the Provincial Council elections.

In the event the government takes a policy decision to hold the elections of all nine provinces together, the Western, Southern and Uva Provincial Councils of which the term has still not ended, should be dissolved or the Chief Ministers of these provinces would support such a move, said the Western Province Chief Minister Isura Devapriya.

However, the Executive Director of the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said that if there was a genuine need to hold the elections, as a first step the time frame for it should be immediately set.

He noted that although it would be relatively easy to include the clause to include 25% female representation in the nomination lists, it would take much longer to include the amendment to ensure that 25% of the appointed representatives should be women.

However, according to sources close to the President, the President is preparing a proposal to be presented to the Cabinet to cancel the mixed electoral system and hold the election under the former PR system.
