20 pc of boys, 10 pc of girls are sexually abused Featured

Twenty per cent of boys and 10 pc of girls are subjected to sexual abuse in Sri Lanka, according to former chairman of the National Child Protection Authority Prof. Harendra de Silva.

Prof. Ashvini Fernando of the Kelaniya University’s medical faculty says 1,582 incidents of child sexual abuse had occurred in 2015.

She say 96 pc of the victims were abused by persons known to them and the abuses happened at places close to them.

Speaking at a media briefing, Dr. Fernando said causes of the abuse were the mother being absent in the family, parental divorce, drug addict fathers etc.

According to her, only 51 pc of Sri Lankan children lived with their parents.

Psychological rehabilitation of the victims are essential, she added.
