Cleaning of Northern wells commences (photos)

The Army and Navy personnel have commenced the cleaning of wells in the Killinochchi and Mulaithivu areas that were contaminated due to the recent floods.

A group of 79 North Central Command Naval personnel together with the soldiers attached to the Killinochchi Security Force Headquarters were deployed to clean the affected wells.

The wells in the Killinochchi, Vishvamadu area, wells in public places and the private wells belonging to those affected by the floods are currently being cleaned, while the Navy mobile water purifiers are also being deployed to supply clean drinking water to the affected families.

All the wells in the flood affected areas are filled with mud and the water is polluted and unusable.

Due to the recent floods 114, 458 persons belonging to 27,625 families have reportedly been affected by the floods in the North, according to the DMC and the security forces.

The DMC noted that due to the floods in the Northern districts of Killinochchi, Mulaithivu, Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna 10,424 persons belonging to 3258 families were displaced and is currently being housed in 32 shelters.
