AG’s advice sought to grant ministries to SLFP MPs Featured

The advice of the attorney general will be sought to grant ministerial positions to the SLFP MPs who have joined the government, says non-cabinet minister Ajith P. Perera.

In the meantime, UNP general secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says over 10 UPFA MPs will join the government within days.

He has told Sunday ‘Mawbima’ that not all of them would be accepted for the government’s gain.

Those accused of corruption, fraud and are selfish will not be accepted, said Kariyawasam, adding the ones acceptable to the government group will be selected.

Thereafter, the government can have a 120-member majority, he said.

Moves to raise cabinet

He said however, there would be no national government again, and it would be a UNF government.

Kariyawasam said attempts would be made to restrict the cabinet to 30,but if needed, parliamentary approval would be obtained for an increase, but not exceeding 48.

President will not approve

However, UPFA MP Prasanna Ranatunga says president Maithripala Sirisena would not approve of a national government or to raise the cabinet to over 30 members.
