He said there is a shortage of cancer drugs as well, which creates a complicated situation for patients.
He said although the Treasury Secretary had said that funds from other ministries would be given to the Health Ministry for the purchase of drugs, the Treasury Secretary has no authority to do so. He noted that after the parliament was dissolved the Finance Minister has no authority to obtain Cabinet approval and issue funds on a warrant.
Dr. Senaratne noted that the Credit application forms issued by the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation to state banks has also been rejected due to non-payment.
Meanwhile, the Health Services Director Dr. Anil Jasinghe said that measures had been taken to supply the required medicines to government hospitals uninterrupted.
