It stated that if not, the President had asked the UNP to name another person from the party for the post of Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, MP Kumara Welgama said that power should be handed over to the side that can show majority, be it Mahinda Rajapaksa’s faction or Ranil Wickremesinghe’s faction.
“I feel that the side that has the majority should be allowed to government, but this has still not happened properly. This is a weakness of the Speaker.
We must think of this country. I doubt any country would issue a visa to any of the MPs in the future. This is a pathetic situation. We should not be power hungry. Whether we sit on the government benches or the opposition benches, we must respect majority opinion. Hence, we must allow the party that holds the 113 majority to government.”
