Govt. doesn't have majority - Speaker Featured

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today (14) declared that the purported new govt doesn't have majority in the House.

The JVP submitted a No-Confidence motion against PM Mahinda Rajapaksa.

However, a heated situation took place after MPs tried to block the vote on standing orders. The Suspension of Standing Orders approved by a majority and PM Mahinda Rajapaksa had walked out of the House when the no confidence vote against him was about to be taken up.

Under this backdrop, the Speaker adjourned parliament until 10.00am tomorrow (15) after a tense situation erupted in the House today (14).

Proceedings began at 10.00am and with Mahinda Rajapaksa taking up the PM seat.

In addition, Newly appointed Minister A. H. M. Fowzie, Piyasena Gamage & Manusha Nanayakkara crossed over to the opposition benches.
