UNP wants reach agreement with president Featured

The UNP leadership has decided to reach agreement with president Maithripala Sirisena to take over the country’s administration after demonstrating majority support in parliament, party sources say.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed with top party figures who have stressed the need to restore a close rapport with the president.

Accordingly, a senior party figure sent a message to president Sirisena last night (13) through a close confidante of the president, and the response is reported to be positive.

In the meantime, a top figure running the media affairs of the party has issued instructions that the president be not attacked personally.

Akila has confidence in Maithri

Meanwhile, UNP general secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told the media at Sirikotha yesterday that he was confident the president would allow the UNF to run the country as it commands majority support in parliament.

Joining in, MP Ruwan Wijewardena said the so-called revelations made by Namal Kumara about a conspiracy to kill the president and the former defence secretary were clearly a conspiracy to topple the UNF government.
