Mahinda told to name Basil as presidential candidate! Featured

Several leaders of the joint opposition met ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (06) and told him that he should immediately announce Basil Rajapaksa as their candidate if they have to have any hope at the next presidential election, reliable sources told Sri Lanka Mirror.

They made the request while expressing their views with regard to their failed ‘Jana Balaya Kolambata’ protest campaign in Colombo on the previous day.

However, Mahinda has claimed his son Namal had been able to bring a massive crowd for the protest, and accused certain leaders of the JO and followers of Basil of not having extended their support.

He said with feeling that a website run by Wimal Weerawansa and social media users loyal to him were attacking Namal.

Mahinda went onto say that the government had become frightened by the massive crowds that came for the protest and added that their presidential candidate should not be announced in a hurry.

Social media and certain national newspapers loyal to the JO are now saying that the protest campaign could have been a success had Basil given it the leadership.
