A proposal to double the salary of members of the Colombo municipal council should be approved by the cabinet and gazetted, says Kamal Padmasiri, secretary to the ministry of local government.

The CMC’s standing committee on finance has approved the proposal by mayor Rosie Senanayake on August 13 to raise the salary from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 45,000.

But, that is yet to be intimated to the ministry, Padmasiri says.

The CMC has 119 members, and their monthly salaries presently costs a total of Rs. 3,213,000.

In addition, they are paid a transport, telephone and stamp allowance of Rs. 7,000.

The mayor has also obtained approval to increase that allowance to Rs. 25,000 as well.
