6 out of every 1000 infants suffer heart ailments Featured

Between six to eight in every thousand children born in Sri Lanka suffer some form of heart ailment, according to specialists.

Annually around 375,000 child births are reported and out of that figure around 3000 new born children suffer some form of heart disease, said Paediatric Cardiologist and Chairman of the Children's Heart Project of Sri Lanka. Dr. Duminda Samarasinghe.

The Little Hearts Project was launched to care for children with such heart conditions, it was revealed at a press conference held in Colombo.

It is also expected to build a special paediatric cardiac unit at the Lady Ridgeway hospital in Colombo under the Little Hearts project.

According to Dr. Duminda Samarasinghe, through this project it is anticipated that within the next 20 years, the lives of over 200,000 children with heart conditions could be saved.
