A group of UNP backbenchers is reportedly going to move a no-confidence motion against Rajapakshe.
However, a senior UNP minister told Sri Lanka Mirror that the prime minister would ask the president in the coming week to remove Rajapakshe from his portfolio.
Politicians expressed various views with regard to the no-confidence motion to be brought against him.
According to lankaenews website, the no-confidence motion accuses him of failure to formulate laws and prepare the administrative framework to expeditiously and fairly hear serious corruption, murder and other criminal cases and punish the guilty.
He has also failed to introduce new laws against bribery and corruption and to adopt new laws to recover wealth amassed through crime, it says.
The minister has publicly failed to act according to effective proposals to efficient enforcement of criminal justice and to respect the collective responsibility principle of the cabinet.
