President pays floral tributes to Illangaratne statue

(Srilankamirror) – President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning (May 01) paid floral tributes to the statue of the late politician and writer T.B. Illangaratne at Nawam Mawatha in Colombo.

As a minister, Mr. Illangaratne was instrumental in making May Day a public holiday and also formed labour tribunals, salaries commission and the EPF.

The commemorative function was organized by the People’s Bank, also formed by him, in addition to Lotteries Board, Salusala and several other state institutions.

From 1956 to 1977, he held the cabinet portfolios of labour, housing, social services, commerce, food and ports.
