Early exits for Williams sisters at French Open
(Srilankamirror) – In a shocking match, No. 05 seed Serena Williams was stunned by 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France, at the first round of the French Open at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris on May 29.
Razzano won the match by 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Williams was two points from victory nine times in the second set, including leading 5-1 in the tiebreaker. But Razzano won six straight points to force a third set, and then took control of the match.
“I made so many errors today, which isn’t the game I was playing in the past,” Williams said. “That’s life.”
A day after Serena’s departure, Venus Williams lost 6-2, 6-3 to No. 3-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland at Roland Garros.
The early exit marked the first time in 43 major tournaments with both in the field that neither Williams got to the third round.
