‘Singing national anthem in Tamil, a ridiculous idea’

(Srilankamirror) -  Singing the national anthem in the Tamil language, which is a recommendations of the LLRC, is a ridiculous and unpractical idea, said defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

He stressed that the political proposals contained in the commission report too, cannot be implemented.

The implementation of the rest of the recommendations is underway, said the defence secretary.

He went onto say that provincial councils cannot be given land and police powers as requested by certain politicians.

The devolution of powers to the provinces is already taking place under the 13th amendment to the constitution, said Mr. Rajapaksa.

Also, the disarming of the armed groups in the north and the east and the release of detainees are also two LLRC proposals which are being followed, he added.

New Zealand National Anthem is sung in both Maori and English languages. In fact, it’s sung in Maori Language first (language of the minority).

Personally I feel having a dual passport specially from the USA is ridiculous while Go”a”tabhaya attacks the USA
Maybe he should look at other countries where land and police powers are part of the provinces. Example Canada.

It is time for Gotabhaya and all the Rajapaksa’s of the country give up their nationalist and sinhalese mentality and think of the country before self first

Even, our government can positively think on the matter of singing national anthem in Tamil and other optimistic inclusive approaches toward minorities. If you adamantly continue your antagonism it will caused for restoration of violence and economic sanction against to country.

In other words, he admits that his brother the President had appointed a useless commission headed by some jokers to come up with a “ridiculous” report, recommendations of which the President had also announced to the whole world thus making the whole exercise a Big Joke.

Why you think is rediculous? let the singers decide what language they want to sing…don’t enforce, have options end of the day it’s a song about mother land..People should have the right to sing any language they prefer…secondly what’s the point forcing someone to sing a song they don’t understand..song should mean to someone so it gives a value and pride. No point memorising and sing for sake…

I am a guy from Upcountry. I am not a Jaffna Tamil. But from the time I was a child I have sung the national anthem in Tamil and Singhala. So what is so ridicuolus about singing in Tamil. It may be so to the Defence Sec., as he is not Tri Lingual. He should go to school and study Tamil. Tamil is also a language permitted in the constitution of Sri Lanka. May be before going to school to study Tamil, he should study the constitution of Sri Lanka, may be he should read it in Singhala. From what he is saying it appears that he does not understand the English version of the Constitution. What a stupid statement. What do you expect from a stupid guy like this.

Why isn’t it practical? Can we take the National anthem of New Zealand as an example?

Don’t be stupid… Have you heard the National Anthem sung in Spanish in USA? 54% Californians are Spanish Speaking. Have you heard UK or France National Anthem sung in Arabic too? Never forget the great saying ” when you are in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhalese. Let the majority decide what’s good for Sri Lanka.

One country has only one nation. Therefore it can has only one national athem.
